Production Treatment
Wretch 32 – don’t be afraid
Length of the song – 3.31
Our video is targeted at a young urban audience; it will contain scenes of violence, which will not be suitable to young children or also references to death at the end of the video.
The song is the modern genre of rap/R&B. The video will involve scenes of domestic violence of a couple, then when the song has the female vocals it will show a character of an angel dressed all in white to create and eerie atmosphere and symbolize an angel of death. By the end of the video the angel will be walking of with the female that has been being abused through the video to symbolize her death and walking away from a distort male character realizing his loss.
Our video is going to be mainly narrative based with a minor part of performance. We have been discussing ideas for costumes and though we haven’t decided on specific costumes yet, we have said that for the female character in the narrative of the song her costume should be plane to avoid focus on the female alone and more on what is happening to her, we suggested a plane white vest as the white will represent her innocence and vulnerability. The angel in the video who will be doing the performance element as well as playing a role in the narrative, will be dressed in pure white with very dramatic make up to enforce that the angel will stand out in the shots she is in, the white in this case is to portray purity and innocence of the angel coming to the rescue of the female character.
The male character will be dressed in a simple outfit with a hat to hide his face to make him seem more intimidating as it is common for people to be scared of the unknown.
We are aiming to crate tension in our music video by the use of slow motion editing. We want to create and eerie atmosphere we did this by using black and white filters over certain scenes. We are using shallow and deep depth of field to focus on key characters and symbolic parts.
We took our time to decide on all the locations we are going use for our video we chose specific locations that highlight the atmosphere and theme we are aiming to create. For example the use of a pathway that is overshadowed by trees as the female character is running through to represent her entrapment and the life she wants to run away from.

Planning

At the start of the making of the music video we brainstormed a variety of songs that as a whole we all liked and felt we could work with, at the end of it we had a short list of simular songs and genres and came to the decission that Wretch32's song 'Dont be affraid' was the one we all wanted to use.

Planning

Here is another brainstorm made druing planning, it is of ideas we could use in the video after we had decided on useing Wretch 32's song ' Dont be Afraid' .

After creating our story board we had the bases for our idea which we could then work from; helping us develop and continue our project, but after writing the shot list we have realized that the storyboard is not entirly correct, as there are many shots and scenes we haven’t added, we have now changed many things realizing that some of the ideas wouldn’t work to the best quality and also would flow with the song to the best it could.

Writing the shot list has made us realize we need 15 shots per location such as using many close ups, establishing shots and mid shots. We have decided the main focus character of are music video should be the angel as she has the most lip syncing and main performance in the video. The angel is going to be played by Catharine, and Ashleigh and actor we thought fit with the part are going to play the distressed girl and the boy beating her up. Hannah and Chloe are going to be filming and editing

STORYBOARD

This is our proposed storyboard for the basis of our music video.

The first shot consists of the angel standing over the couple who are arguing progressivly with a long shot of the 3 in a bedroom as well as using inserts and cutaways too and from the couple. More over we are going to use slow motion as the argument progressed to violence being infilicted on the women. Moving on from the bedroom scene with the argueing slowly moving on to fighting we fade in to the angel in the studio using a mid shot which will focus on the main aspects of the angel she will also have many bright lights which will put the spotlight on her making her the key focus the angel will singing the chorus we will them lipsync this to the song over in the final cut pro.
Fading out of the angel in the studio we move back to the bedroom scence on location to see that things have progressed and changed in the scene as the women is now curled up in the corner making her look fragie and vunrable and the man is towering over her making him look very dominate and intimidating.Behind the couple though the window the angel will be stood there with her arms widely spread this will all be in black and white to create effect and atmosphere . Also cutting from the bedroom scence on location we flick to a close up of the angel in the windowthis conotes she is looking over the women. we then fade out and cut to another one of are chossen locations , withington park with the couple sepratly running though an over grown forest like passage ways.We will use a long shot to enable the whloe of the location to be seen by the spectator the lighting herewill be very low key and dark . we will film these sparatly and the edit them on final cut pro so that they are on the same screen. moreover we decided that the women would be stood on the top of a building. We then decided for are final location to uses the top of a building creating an atmospheric oura to conote danger as well as to show she is very insucure.this will also have very low key lighting.
For the final scene we decided we needed to create a dramatic effect, thinking thoroughly into this we decided we needed to create a symbolic ending which the viewer could then make their own interpretation of .In turn we decided to use the same location as previous in Withington Park we dicussed many ways of ending the film but decided to make the ending simple but effective using an two shot from behind of the angel and the women walking away peacefully in the distance.

This is an overview of the proposed storyboard

FLIMING LOCATIONS

Lowery Location.

In this location we thought the landscape would look really effective in our urban music video. We thought that the metallic grey colours of the building suited our genre as music. A city centre location was best fit for the music video. In the other locations they were very osolated bringing the focus to the protagonist, therefore we felt we needed more versatile shots.

Davyhulme Pathway Location

This was another possioble location we looked at before innitially deciding to use the park as it had some of the qualities such as its over bearing trees to highlight the females characters feelings over intimidation and over powered by the make character however when filming in the light it did not have the eerie atmosphere need and in the dark the lighing on the camera did not look how we wanted ir to look where as though filmed in the day the carpark location gave us the dark and eerie look we wanted.

Flat Location

For the start of our music video where the scenes of domestic abuse are going to be shown, we have decided to use a modern plain and simple location this flat is one of our location choices we feel this might be best as the simplicity of it will create focus on the actual action happening in the location.

Carpark Location
The use of the car park location we feel will highlight the gritty undertone of our music choice, we feel the isolation of carpark could symbolise the feelings and intense emotions of the female character. We are planning to use ashliegh as the female character to look out at the landscapes and open space of manchester from within the dark, dingy and isolated carpark, to display her feelings of wanting to break free, and the lyrics at the time of this shot will be ' paint the picture is it clear enough' to show she can see what she wants but the dark and painful absticles are in the way. This is why this is a possible location choice and will see if it looks and creates everything we want it to.

Lowery location

Halfway through our editing process, we came to the conclusion that we didn't have enough valuable footage of a high enough standard that we were comfortable would fit in our music video. Therefore we spent the day looking around manchester for possible locations we thought suited the tone and themes in our music video, we thought the modern esthetically pleasing look of salford quays would look quite contemporary flattering look and add something to our music video. we spent the day taking pictures of the different locations we thought were suitable.

we thought this location was eye catching and would also put the odd appearance of the protagonist in the juxtaposition making it more visually entertaining.

Friends house,location shot

Here is a location we may possibly use for the domestic abuse and violent aspects of our video as it is a simple middle class house to show the status of the characters in our video.

As a further development we have decided not to use this location as we felt the appartment location was more simple therefore gaining more focus on what is happening in the scenes. And we all felt that the lighting was better in the appartment than the house as it ave us less light and the cameras we have been given to use they are less visually effective.

withington park,location shot

This is the park we used in our music video filming. we looked at many different parks in many different locations but in the end we decided this is the best as the overbearing trees and windy pathways gave the spooky isolated appearance we hoped for

Amc, bridge location shot

This is a location idea, it is manchesters AMC cinemas bridge we feel it will help present the feeling of breaking point and overwhelming emotions of the female character in our video. We are thinking of adding the angel into some shots at this location to emphasise on the constant appearance of the angel when the female character is feeling at her lowest.

Friday 11th november: First day filming

On Friday the 11th November wee started filming our music video, or key location for our first scene of our music video was a friend’s house we decided to use this house this house because it was modernly furnished and plain. Therefore there would be no personal possessions, which would make it look poor. The day was a productive start to our filming; we made great progress the use of an outside actor worked effectively. At first we had some difficulty with the camera angles to make sure all three characters were placed in the screen effectively. Chloe and Hannah both contributed widely to use of the camera, Ashleigh and Catherine were mainly performance however made big contributions as we all discussed as a group the best camera shots to be used

filiming chorus in studio ,angel hand up angle one

we filmed the chorus in studio ,this is an overall shot of the angel in the stdio and what she looks like in full costume with the main lights and camera on her

filiming chorus in studio ,angel hand up over all shot

whilst recordig the film chorus in studio , we took pictures of what was happening and the possition of the angel and he camera this shot best represents the angel

Recording in studio

whilst recording in the studio we looked at the differnt effects such as fades and switching camers angles

control panel to record chorus

In studio recording chorus

angel with arm up setting up camera angles and lights

we needed to ensure every camera was in the correct position and the there was nothing in the camera shot that shouldnt be and that all of the angel was in the camera shot.

During filiming in studio.

Before we started filming we had to ensure that the angles for the lighting were correct and also that the angel was correctly postitioned and and wings were sraight. Here is an image of Chloe making sure this all correct before we started to film the choruses of our music piece.

During Studio time.
Making sire the angels wings were possitioned correctly and fit in the shot through the camera. We wanted to make sure it looked visually good through the camera and was framed properlyas we had invisoned it. We used three cameras to get three different possitions of the angel, we had an close up of the angel side on, a close up of the angel stood in the centre of the screen and a long shot so the angels full costume could be displayed. The use of the three different shots was really effective.

Studio Equipment Different Camera Shot.

In the studio we positioned all the cameras so they were in the correct position this enabled us whilst live filming to switch from different cameras to create maximum effect.

Distribution Discussion

As a group we all find the massive growing and diverse media world fascinating, we discussed different ways in which we could benefit the most through distributing our low budget film. We discussed using viral marketing and different ways of getting our video out there, viral marketing is growing larger and more powerful year by year as more and more people are using the internet mobiles and technical applications to view, share, research the media, through different viral techniques such as mobile phone adverts, mobile apps and making pages network sites such as facebook and twitter. Another constantly successful method of distributing our music video is spreading it through word and mouth this enforces the curiosity of the public to go and look for the video themselves and easily accessible by the viral advertising and increasing the videos popularity. We also discussed how we could then further increase the videos views and awareness, by performing and handing out free demos of our music video at target audience appropriate night clubs and events. All these factors will increase the market sales and the popularity of the video therefore if the video was to be released the buyer amount will be significantly higher in comparison to releasing the video without any advertising and distribution efforts.
