Analysed Posters and CD Covers

Katy Perry - California Girls
Katy Perry is a new pop icon in today’s music industry. She is a widly known international star. Katy’s image is very important to success and new found fame. She like to be seen as very out going and very fashion foward person.
When Katy launched her new album ‘California Girls’ she designed a whole image to complement it. In her first video to the album it was all a sort of Willy Wonkier and the Chocolate Factory meets California beaches.
In this poster the font used for her name, is an ongoing theme that she uses in all her posters; pictures, CD covers, or any other endorsements. The kandy stripe red and the play full font help connote her personality and keep the theme of the album.
Katie is the main focus of the poster and her bright clothes help draw immediate attention to her. Her high waisted shorts are fashionable and her old vintage looking blouse helps maintain her style.
The use of key props such as the paddling pool also helps connote her playful childish nature, making her seem likable. However she is still seen as a sex symbol, dressed in skimpy cloth and looking attractive. These two factors are used to try and connect with a higher audience.
The white wicker fences with the green grass are a classic American cliché. She is playing on this idea.
In her hand Katy is holding a love heart shaped chocolate lolly, this again is used to enhance her childish nature and extends her on- going theme.
In the bottom corner in bold white so that it stands out is the advertisement for her album. Although the advert is small, as not to ruin the poster, it is affective. A small picture of the album CD cover is shown. Underneath is her web site and were to buy the CD. On top a caption ‘the album featuring the #1 smash hit I kissed a girl out now’ this really help sell the album as this song as number one in many countries . The #1 keeps it young looking, a modern use of symbols, as a replacement for letters, is trying and appear ‘of its time’
The use of bright colours on this poster really makes it eye catching, the yellow rubber ducks in the paddling pool adds humour to the poster, to demonstrate her personality. The bright blue sky may connate a good day witch could bring more positivity towards the star and her own bright clothing all makes the poster scream good pop music.

Here is an image of Rihanna’s single ‘Hard’ featuring Jay Z. The contrasting colour scheme maybe simple but it is very effective as you are automatically drawn to the name of the single, and the harsh colour of red on the clean and effortless background shadows over the name of the single as it enforces a hard and violent image. It is fairly simple and does not display much information for example the artists name is not written on the cover just a simple first initial this may discourage people to purchase this single and may not create audience appeal however with artist such as Rihanna who is a global sensation the image of the herself shows clearly who’s single it is and a representation of her success and fame. The sexual and provocative appearance of the artist herself creates a controversial statement, and is more outspoken through the image referring to nudity compared to other single and album covers for sale.

Lady Gaga- Monster ball.

The use of shape, colour and lighting brings out all aspects in this advertisement; the main image of Gaga in the centre of the page with a large, metal, spherical ball around the outside of her body makes her the centrepiece of the image. The use of the spherical ball links with the title of the tour she is doing which shows a running theme.
The dark lighting also links with the title of monster as dark and dullness often connotes this; leaving a sense of wonder to how the shows would actually be. The actors in the background also help create an atmosphere of morbidness as they show no expression and have dark costumes and all their attention is on Gaga.
The titles are very simple but effective they are situated at the top so then it draws the audience underneath to the actual image. They are in a simple font to not take too much attention away from the rest of the advertisement.
This poster could help our final designs because our storyline is quite a dark and sinister one and some of the aspects used in Gaga’s advertisement could also be used in our own.
